Chronic enteropathy encompasses chronic intestinal disease associated with a variety of clinical signs such as diarrhea, vomiting, hyporexia, and more for 3 or more weeks’ duration. There are 3 primary forms of chronic enteropathy in dogs: food-responsive enteropathy, antibiotic-responsive enteropathy, and steroid/immunosuppressive drug-responsive enteropathy, and the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to each requires a comprehensive understanding of the phenotypic variables associated with each disorder, an awareness of elimination diets for managing food-responsive enteropathy, and a keen understanding of the inherent limitations and adverse effects associated with the chronic administration of antimicrobials for the management of antibiotic-responsive enteropathy. This seminar will provide a case-based overview on the rational diagnostic approach to dogs with chronic enteropathies, with an emphasis on optimization of dietary selection for affected dogs and recommendations for implementing antimicrobial or immunomodulatory therapy when warranted.
