Inappropriate urination is not just an inconvenience. It can impact overall animal welfare and is considered a leading cause of pet surrender and euthanasia. Getting to the root cause of these cases is critical to our patients’ health and quality of life and maintenance of the human–animal bond. Crystalluria and urine pH should not be the only indicators as to whether uroliths are present and what type they are. Presence of clinical signs, contributing factors, and imaging need to be considered when diagnosing these patients. Maximize results, minimize frustration, and maintain good antibiotic stewardship with targeted diagnostics and appropriate therapeutics. Ideally, urine culture should be used to determine if antibiotics are warranted and to specify which antibiotic to prescribe. A therapeutic diet such as Purina® Pro Plan® Veterinary Diets UR Urinary® St/Ox® Feline and Canine formulas can minimize the risk for both struvite and calcium oxalate stones by providing a proper balance of minerals and promoting an optimal range of urine pH. Increasing water intake is of primary importance in the treatment of LUTS. A canned diet is preferable, as more moisture will be consumed through wet food.
