We hope you found the information helpful and inspiring in the management of obese patients with OA.
Below you will find the Top 5 Takeaways from the webinar, as well as instructions for obtaining your CE certificate.
Osteoarthritis can often have a negative impact on patient quality of life and well-being. In some circumstances, this may even contribute to a pet owner’s decision to euthanize.
Obesity is a major risk factor for osteoarthritis. Effective management of osteoarthritis requires addressing the health of the joints and the overall health of the patient.
An ideal weight loss program requires good communication, setting appropriate expectations, and following up to re-evaluate the patient’s progress. Dogs should be fed an evidence-based, commercially formulated weight loss diet such as Purina® Pro Plan® Veterinary Diets OM®. Weight loss should be monitored with the goal of the patient losing 1% to 2% of body weight per week.
To help manage osteoarthritis, once any desired weight loss has been achieved, it can be helpful to utilize an evidence-based diet that is enriched with omega-3 fatty acids for joint support. There are many benefits of including EPA and DHA in a balanced diet, such as Purina® Pro Plan® Veterinary Diets JM®.
Don’t underestimate what your patients can achieve with proper nutrition, rehabilitation, and pet owner engagement. The pet owner’s routine and habits should also be discussed as a multimodal approach to overall care, and we need to offer them clear communication, empathy, and trust.
