We hope you found the information helpful in maintaining patients’ digestive health.
An imbalance in the gastrointestinal microbiome can lead to both subclinical and clinical conditions. This can impact the overall health and quality of life of the patient.
Probiotics may provide benefits such as protection against infection, minimizing gastrointestinal upset, maintaining fecal quality, and providing nutritional benefits. Studies support the use of Enterococcus faecium SF68 as a safe and effective probiotic in dogs and cats.
Prebiotics are non-digestible carbohydrates that pass unchanged into the large intestine and are fermented by beneficial bacteria in the colon. Studies support the use of psyllium as an effective prebiotic in dogs and cats.
Synbiotics (a combination of pre- and probiotics) are a developing field of research. They can be complementary or synergistic, but each combination must be tested to determine combined effects.
Studies have shown the synbiotic containing Enterococcus faecium SF68 and psyllium improves specific bacterial populations associated with digestive health, increases intestinal microbial diversity, and decreases resolution time for non-specific diarrhea.
