Cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) appears to be well-absorbed and useful as a therapeutic in dogs. Based on studies in humans and macaques, cannabinoids may be helpful in treating clinical signs associated with IBD. Cannabidiol (CBD)/CBDA can improve pruritus in dogs. CBD/CBDA do not appear to affect lesion severity or cytokine profile in atopic dermatitis. No statistically significant drug interactions were observed during the atopic dermatitis study. ALP elevations were seen in some dogs during the study, but further investigation is needed to evaluate the cause. Current data show that cannabinoids may reduce inflammation without inhibiting other aspects of the immune response, such as neutrophil phagocytosis.
