We are starting to understand the pharmacology and metabolism of cannabidiol (CBD) products in animals, but we still have a lot to learn, including potential toxicity, bioavailability when given in different forms, drug synergies, and interactions. These may all be different in different species. Current recommended dosing of CBD is around 2 mg/kg for dogs. More studies regarding absorption in different vehicles and in other species need to be done. CBD compounds, which are lipophilic, appear to be absorbed better with meals, particularly fats. Cannabidiolic acid absorption appears to be superior to CBD in all species studied. This may be due to bioconversion to CBD in the acidic environment of the stomach. Pharmacokinetic differences between species may result in the conclusion that CBD products are not indicated in some species.
