The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is an internal regulatory system present in all animals, except insects. It restores homeostasis and communicates with other systems, including the nervous system. The entourage effect: Full-spectrum hemp products containing multiple compounds may act synergistically to produce better results. We are still learning about possible drug interactions, but giving cannabinoid-rich hemp products concurrently with other sedating drugs such as opioids and gabapentin may result in transient lethargy. When evaluating a hemp product, look for a full spectrum of ingredients, and request to see a third-party certificate of analysis. Labeling can be unreliable, and heavy metal toxicity has been demonstrated in some products. Adverse effects resulting from cannabinoid-rich products (eg, nausea, lethargy, behavioral changes) are usually mild in dogs, and CBD toxicity in dogs is rare. Studies suggest transdermal absorption of some compounds may be comparable to oral dosing and bypass hepatic metabolism but may result in erythema at the site of administration.
