Once pupillary light reflexes have been evaluated, pupillary dilation is essential for a thorough fundic examination.
The fundus consists of the tapetum, the nontapetum, the optic nerve, and the retina, with significant normal variation.
A hyperreflective tapetum indicates retinal thinning (eg, in sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome or in progressive retinal atrophy). By contrast, a hyporeflective tapetum indicates an addition under the retina (eg, cells, fluid, or blood).
Patients with retinal detachment require rapid and thorough workups, including blood pressure measurement. With early treatment, retinal reattachment and recovery of vision may be possible.
Numerous ocular diseases can be heritable, including optic nerve colobomas, Collie eye abnormality, retinal dysplasia, canine multifocal retinopathy, and optic nerve hypoplasia/aplasia.
