Join Dr. Tamara Grubb in discussing tools that can be used to identify chronic pain, ideas on how to discuss pet pain with clients, and a new option for treatment of chronic osteoarthritis pain.
Chronic pain is “maladaptive” pain that provides no benefit to the patient
Chronic pain causes negative effects on the patient’s health, behavior, and welfare and can damage the human–animal bond
Animals cannot verbally express their pain, so humans must look for the impact of pain, primarily on behavior and mobility
Pet parents are often either distressed or disbelieving when pain is diagnosed in their pets, and specific communication strategies should be utilized
A novel therapeutic is now available for treatment of chronic osteoarthritis pain, which is the most common cause of chronic pain in mammals
