Dogs with brachycephalic airway syndrome may benefit from early surgical intervention. In a recent study, 23% of patients developed complications following surgery to correct brachycephalic airway syndrome.

Surgical correction of BAS should be performed early for ideal long-term health and a better prognosis. Preoperative radiography should be obtained to determine if pneumonia is present, and surgery should potentially be postponed until pneumonia has resolved. Further studies are indicated to determine whether prokinetics, antacids, or antiemetics may be beneficial in decreasing the risk for regurgitation/vomiting; this may result in a lower incidence of respiratory compromise.
