Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome (SARDS) can be a frightening diagnosis for owners to hear — both because of the acute vision loss afflicting their beloved pet and because so little is understood about the causes, onset, and outcome of the disorder. This new study examines the results of an online questionnaire completed by over 400 owners of dogs with a confirmed diagnosis of SARDS, with new data acquired on the onset of vision loss, treatment responses, comorbidities, and prognosis.

When an owner brings you a dog with sudden vision loss, SARDS will likely be on your radar. Having new information about breed and age predilections, common non-vision related clinical signs, and the pros and cons of different treatment modalities will better allow you to diagnose and manage these patients, as well as provide much-needed reassurance to anxious owners.
