Vertebral heart score (VHS) is a handy quantitative method of identifying cardiac enlargement on thoracic radiographs. However, the score can be affected by a variety of factors, including patient positioning, caliper placement, and breed. A new study examines the VHS of 30 adult Chihuahuas, with the goal of determining if the historical reference limit is appropriate when interpreting VHS in this popular breed.

VHS can be a useful tool in your cardiac toolbox, but only with correct implementation and interpretation.
