In order to better quantify the association between prednisolone therapy and the development of feline diabetes, mellitus (DM), 143 cats were given prednisolone daily (≥1.9 mg/kg/day) for at least 3 weeks, then monitored for signs of DM for at least 3 months after initial therapy.

Steroid therapy is associated with insulin resistance, an important risk factor in the development of DM. Of the cats in this study, 9.8% developed DM, most within the first 3 months of initial prednisolone therapy. These findings reveal the importance of counseling pet owners to monitor for signs of DM including polydipsia, polyuria, once steroid therapy has been initiated.
