Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) disease is the leading cause of pelvic limb lameness in dogs. A recent study evaluated how several factors, including method of treatment (surgical vs medical), affected lifespan in these patients.

Although some dogs with CCL disease can be managed medically, surgery resulted in the most favorable long term outcomes including increased survival time. Additional patient factors, including age, body weight and concurrent orthopedic conditions were shown to negatively affect life expectancy, and should be taken into account when developing a treatment plan.
