Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is an often life-threatening condition that requires immediate intervention in the form of stabilization, decompression, and derotation. But for pets that can’t handle prolonged anesthesia, a staged approach may be the safest course of action. In this new retrospective study, the cases of 41 dogs undergoing treatment for GDV were examined, with the goal of looking for preoperative markers of gastric necrosis to help veterinarians decide which patients can wait and which need surgery ASAP.

Get the lowdown on the staged approach to treatment of GDV and how it affects patient outcomes.
